Laughing gas is also often called “minimal inhaled sedation.” This method of sedation is a great option for those who may be anxious about an upcoming treatment, but wish to avoid a deeper level of sedation. Laughing gas is delivered through a nose mask, and its effects include a feeling of lightness and euphoria. You’ll feel a bit disconnected from your body, and you will feel numb to most sensations. These effects wear off after only about 5 minutes post-treatment, so you can get back to your day-to-day life immediately after your appointment, and you can even drive yourself home from the office.
IV sedation is an ideal option for those who would like deeper sedation for their dental procedure. This method of sedation is administered intravenously (through your veins).
You will have some level of consciousness during your treatment, but you will be very groggy and sleepy throughout. These side effects can last 4-6 hours or longer, so you will need to plan accordingly and make travel arrangements to get home, as you will not be allowed to drive after treatment.
General anesthesia is the deepest level of sedation. You will be completely unconscious, and won’t be woken up until the medicines wear off. General anesthesia is typically only recommended for the most invasive, extensive dental surgeries. This is because it is more difficult to administer compared to other sedation methods, and the requirement of a ventilator can make it more challenging to work on your teeth and gums. However, Dr. Kirk has years of experience performing general anesthesia, so you can trust Tennessee Implant & Oral Surgery to deliver the best service if you need this method of sedation for a dental procedure.
